Spam Control Software
There are many options available for filtering that come prepackaged with most MTAs (mail transfer agents), for example, sendmail with built-in RBL support. But there are few adaptive spam fighting -secure- SMTP servers that fulfill most or all of the rich function set of the original sendmail utility. Our preferred solution in this instance is our own software, Ironhand®. We also have a new product in the pipeline, CircuitJudge 1.0, available in Fall 2002, which will fully automate spam complaint desk investigation, policy execution, and user deprovisioning.

Why fight Spam? Isn't it free speech?
Well, it's actually expensive speech, your expense. We're talking about unsolicited commercial speech which first of all enjoys a much lower level of protection than political or religious opinion. Besides taking up your valuable network resources, much like a vendor squatting in your front door and blocking access to your high-rent place of business, it's also an indication that your unsecured network mail services may be compromising your overall network security. Most of all, on principle, shouting down someone else's speech is not free speech.

What does Ironhand® do? What does it cost?
This replaces the sendmail executable listener on SMTP port 25 (configurable) and applies a configurable set of filters that allow both adaptation to disallow current spammers' IP danger zones, but also to pass through specific known legitimate sources of email traffic. The highly flexible filter structure also allows SMTP header domain to be specified by DNS name. It also logs all suspicious events and attempts at known SMTP exploits, quarantining all doubtful communication attempts for later examination.

You can see what it does by downloading a freeware version that supports to up to a dozen addresses in one domain, or you can buy the pay-fer version which supports up to 1024 addresses in up to 10 domains for $160. Contact our sales office at (408) 739-1092 for a current quote, or to be added to the access list for downloading current versions. We can negotiate larger site licenses with support services, including installation and administrator training.
