What, Me Worry?
A major problem on the public Internet these days is that it's so much like the Wild West. Few if any law enforcement agencies enforce even the most rudimentary kinds of law and order. You may say to yourself "Why would anybody care enough to break into my systems? I don't have anything of value."

That's not important to hackers and other cybernetic miscreants. All they care about is the territory that you represent - you become simply gang turf to them, or, even worse, they use your office equipment to do unlawful activity such as stealing credit cards or other fraud.

What Can be Done?
We can help the small business in a low cost way at several levels. 1) We can schedule a risk assessment interview with you that should take about an hour, and leave you more informed, and with a report in hand listing the most cost-effective things you can do. 2) We can perform a vulnerability assessment ourselves, or configure a regular service such as AKABA so you can get regular vulnerability reports, or 3) We can send you a fully qualified external technical auditor (CISA, GSNA, and CISSP available, as you prefer) to make a full report on your information assets, the risks to which you are exposed as a company, and dollar savings estimates for all appropriate risk mitigation measures.

How much Does it Cost? Is it Worth it?
It depends - do a back-of-the-envelope calculation of how much your business would suffer if you lost all the data on your computers, then estimate the fraction of that which relates to your chances of recovery. Do another mental calculation how much time (and how much per hour) would be required to do a full recovery in the event of damage.. add to that the value of down time for your business. If it's in the ballpark of a few hundred dollars or less, then you probably have little to lose (barring the FBI showing up at your door in the event your systems are used for unlawful purposes by criminals).

If it's more than that, then you probably ought to do something about your computers and your Internet connection. The simple consult can cost less than two hundred dollars, the vulnerability assessment can range from less than $100 to a few hundred dollars per year. The full audit can be done for less than a thousand if you have simple systems - but just wait until you get your insurance bill. The audit is still cheap insurance.
